At 7, , yes 7…he decided he was going to be a Criminal Barrister! Yet Shane’s High School Careers advisor told him “he should set his sights lower”…
Despite that advice and working under the assumption that ‘hard work pays off’, Shane successfully completed Commerce and Law degrees before commencing his career as a Solicitor…
Working harder and harder was a strategy that had worked…somewhat.
Welcome To The Real World…
Having ‘made it’ Shane soon got a picture of the ‘real world’… and it certainly wasn’t as pretty as he had dreamed when he was 7!
A Soliciter’s $30k salary wasn’t going to provide much financial freedom, a life of adventure nor cars with the badges Shane had envisioned!
He was no Barrister, yet.
He then set the goal of immersing himself in his profession in order to achieve ‘mastery’…
He parked the vision of financial freedom, of a life of adventure and anything more than a Hyundai and got to work…
It Worked Again!
At 27 Shane was admitted as a Barrister at the Victorian Bar…
Within a month he was clearly busier than all his peers… Shane continued on his journey to ‘mastery’ and pleasingly for him, he quadrupled his income in his first year and even upgraded his car!
He had ‘made it’.
But Something Was Missing…
After nearly 5 years as a Barrister, the successful legal practise growing, he had achieved the target he set when he was 7 years old…
But it had come at a price…
Shane was overweight and unhealthy… the exercising had stopped, playing basketball competitively had stopped and at the same time a healthy diet went out the window and his long time relationship was crumbling…
Shane was operating at stress level 9 for at least 6 days per week… and no matter what business success was being achieved, it could not compensate for the personal dissatisfaction he was feeling…
Welcome to burn out…
Life happens for you not to you…
This wasn’t what he signed up for…
This wasn’t how the vision played out…
This wasn’t financial freedom or a life of adventure…
Knowing only that he wanted to continue on a pathway to ‘Mastery’ Shane turned his life upside down in 6 weeks flat…
Despite criticism and cautions…. There was no more career as a Barrister… no more relationship… an interstate move away from the only life he had known for 32 years…
